 Personnel Program Directors
Dana L. Miller
Dana joined the Trust in August 2008. As Senior Program Director for Grant Programs he is responsible for providing general leadership and oversight of the Trust's grants program and its associated processes. Dana has a Masters degree in higher education administration and prior to coming to the Trust he served three different institutions of higher education, the last eleven at George Fox University in Newberg, Oregon. He lives in Newberg with his wife and two sons.

Terry Stokesbary
A graduate of Washington State University, Terry joined the staff of the Murdock Trust after working with a national organization, Young Life, for nearly 25 years. During his tenure with the Trust, Terry has worked with a large and diverse number of organizations, mostly within the general grantmaking areas of health and human services and education. With a special interest in organizational growth and leadership development, Terry has also helped to enhance and expand the enrichment programs that the Trust offers to its constituency. In essence, these programs are designed to strengthen the organizations in which the Trust serves. As the Senior Program Director for Enrichment Initiatives, Terry is now responsible to oversee all of the Trust's work in this dynamic area. Terry and his wife Becky live in Vancouver, Washington and have two grown children and a daughter-in-law.

Hugh Vander Plas, Ph.D.
Dr. Hugh Vander Plas is Program Director for scientific research. In this capacity, he will handle proposals involving scientific and medical research. He earned a B.A. with Honors in Physics from Calvin College and a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Stanford University. Prior to the Trust, Hugh spent most of his career on staff at the corporate research laboratories at Varian Associates; Xerox Palo Alto Research Center; and Hewlett-Packard Laboratories, most recently in Corvallis, Oregon. His volunteer activities include certification as a Referee Instructor in the American Youth Soccer Association and service as an officer in San Francisco Bay area sections of the American Scientific Affiliation and the Electrochemical Society. Hugh and his wife live in Corvallis, Oregon, and have two grown children. His work at the Trust begins in mid-June.

Jan Kennedy
Jan joined the Trust in September of 1998. A former business owner in Portland and Gresham, she has wide experience as a volunteer and on nonprofit boards in Oregon and Washington. She provides expertise to the Trust in the arts, education, and health and medicine. Jan is the general editor of the highly acclaimed Messages series produced by the Trust. She lives in Washougal, Washington, and has two daughters and three grandsons.

Kit Gillem
Kit came to the Trust September 1998, before which he was Director of Development with The Nature Conservancy of Oregon. Kit's expertise at the Trust includes arts and culture, non-traditional education, and environmental issues. Kit is a recognized leader in philanthropic and non-profit organizational development. He is an Oregon native and lives in Portland with his wife Deborah.

Bart Hadder
Bart came to the Trust in mid-2001 after serving as a life sciences teacher at the middle and high school levels. Bart provides expertise to the Trust in both formal and informal K-12 science-related education. He also handles proposals from a variety of organizations that have programs for young people. Bart and his wife Jackie have two grown children and live in the Vancouver area.

Dave Coleman
Dave joined the Trust April 2005 after a long professional career with the national para-church organization, Youth for Christ. In that capacity his experiences were wide ranging, including strategic planning and leadership training. Dave handles proposals related to organizational leadership, youth organizations, and faith-based non-profit groups. Dave and his wife Joyce have three grown children and live in Lakewood, Washington.

Jill Tatum
Jill Tatum joined the Trust in January 2009 as a Program Director. She comes most recently from Grand Rapids, Michigan, where she taught Biology at Calvin College since 2003. During her time in Grand Rapids, she also pursued a master's degree in counseling from Western Michigan University. Jill served on the Grand Rapids Christian High School board and various other volunteer boards. Jill and her husband have three sons and live in Vancouver, Washington.
