Partners in Science National Conference

Overview

What Did Galileo Start -- Telescopes to Space Probes
Partners in Science National Conference, San Diego, California
on Research Partnerships for High School Teachers
January 16-17, 2009

The Partners in Science National Conference is an event held every January in San Diego, California, where Partners in Science program participants from all across the nation meet to share their research experience with current and veteran Partners. At this conference, current teacher participants in the program share the progress and results of their research. Conference participants will also have an opportunity to hear and interact with scientists of national and international reputation. All in attendance have the opportunity to learn about research that is being conducted around the country, network with other outstanding high school science teachers and scientists, and share ideas about taking the research experience back to the classroom.

Workshops

While the focus of the Partners in Science Program is for high school science teachers to “take off their teacher’s hat"? and become a researcher for two summers, we know that teachers are always looking for ways to use their professional development activities to improve their science teaching. On Friday afternoon, we will provide a choice of workshops focusing on high school science teaching. Workshops will be open to all high school teacher participants, and if space is available, workshops will be open to university research mentors also. The workshop space will be filled on a first-come/first-served basis.

Tours

Conference attendees also have the opportunity to experience San Diego by participating in one of a number of sponsored educational/recreational local tours on Saturday afternoon. These will be open to each conference participant and his/her adult guest (no children) and will be filled on a first-come/first-served basis because of limitations for each tour. We make tour reservations based on your responses and are financially committed to pay for the tour even if participants cancel at the last minute. If you prefer not to take a tour, please note when registering online so that we can get an accurate count.

Presentations by Partners

The conference will emphasize the experiences and findings of Partners in Science participants, and a significant portion of the program will be devoted to presentations and poster displays by high school teachers on previous summers’ research topics. While first-year Partners are expected to present their research results with posters, second-year Partners are expected to share their findings with oral presentations. Second-year Partners may also present posters. The success of the conference will certainly depend on the valued participation of each Partner; therefore, all poster and oral presentation information submitted by the deadline will automatically be accepted. Please read the instructions to authors for oral and poster presentations by clicking the link below. An abstract with title for all oral and poster presentations must be included with your registration and be received by November 14, 2008.
